Lucknow, August 3, 2009: Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, Former President of India visited TCS' newly commissioned facility at Lucknow 'Awadh Park' on August 3rd 2009. Dr Kalam spent almost an hour in TCS office and the associates were truly mesmerized by his pearls of wisdom shared with them.
The programme started with Dr Kalam lighting the tradition lamp of learning followed by an inspiring address to associates. His talk was indeed an intellectual journey into the future directions of science, technology and economy with a special focus on India. Dr Kalam strongly advocated the need for the IT graduates from being software programmers to system professionals. He emphasized the need to integrate the hardware knowledge with the software competency along with business domain skills. He also emphasized the need for building India as a perfect knowledge economy.

He said that collaborative working is the need of the hour. Dr Kalam narrated an inspiring story of his own experience of collaboration with Russia in BrahMos hypersonic cruise missile project as to how an investment of $300M culminated into a Multi million dollar product by cross-leverage and convergence of core competencies of the two countries.

Answering a question on the economic turbulence that Indian economy is going through, Dr Kalam explained the basic reasons why our economy was not as badly hit by the recession. He also spoke on the impact of the Indo-American Nuclear Deal. He also threw light on the need to have 10% GDP growth per annum for 10 years in order to make India a global superpower by 2020. He also added that GDP alone may not be a complete indicator of the economic development and there is a need to gauge the inclusive growth with National Prosperity Index.
Responding to a question on how his life changed after becoming the President of the country, Dr Kalam said he sensed no major change and emphasized the essence of being righteous all the time in the true spirit of the Tata family. He concluded his talk by asking the audience to recite with him these lines-
